4-H Mini Gardens!


Spring will soon be here, so get ready to break out your gardening skills and tools as the 4-H Mini Gardens get under way. The theme for the 2012 gardens is “Pollination Station!” This two part mini garden series will cover the basics of the mini garden process, determine garden location, how to plant, promoting pollination, managing pests, harvesting, and will include time to ask questions. Both sessions will be held at the Extension Center in Dobson.

This “green” opportunity is open to any youth between the ages 5 & 18. Participants will receive all garden materials at the May 1 training.

Part One: “Garden Overview” will be held on Tuesday, May 1 at 6:30 p.m.

Part Two: “Pollination Station” will be held on Tuesday, May 22 at 6:30p.m.

Registration deadline is Tuesday, April 24 no participants will be allowed to participate after this date.

Contest fee:  $10.00 for each participant. Fee includes: garden and workshop materials and entry to Summer Awards Night.

Mtn. Park 4-H Club Hosting an Easter Egg Hunt!


Mountain Park 4-H Club is having an Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 7, 2012. It will be at the Mountain Park Community Park from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend!! We will have crafts, games and lots of Easter eggs. The Easter Bunny will be stopping by to say “hello” so don’t forget your camera! Also, if you are interested in joining our club please come by any of our meetings. We meet on the third Tuesday of every month at the Mountain Park Fire Department at 6:30 p.m. We would love to see you there!

2012 Summer Explosion Registration


We will begin taking summer registration on Tuesday, May 8, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Extension Center in Dobson. Registration will continue to be taken until all classes are full following the May 8 registration kickoff. If there is a must have class we encourage parents to come early. Look for a summer brochure coming soon!

5th Annual NC Operation: Military Kids Visual Arts Contest


The contest is open to all North Carolina youth. Age categories are 5-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-15, and 16-18. Designed to introduce youth to the Visual Arts as a part of the 4-H Expressive Arts Curriculum, youth will utilize their skills and their artistry to capture their views of America and patriotism.

This year’s themes are:
- Love of the USA
- All American Kids
- Spirit of Patriotism
- Military Life
- Honoring Our Heroes

Eligibility of Photos: All photographs must have been taken by youth between the dates of May 1, 2011 and the time of entry. Photos may be submitted only one time and in only one division and class to the North Carolina Operation: Military Kids photography contest.

Eligibility of Artwork: All artwork must have been created by youth between the dates of May 1, 2011 and the time of entry. Artwork may be submitted only one time and in only one division and class to the North Carolina Operation: Military Kids Visual Arts contest.

Entry Deadline: ENTRIES must arrive in Surry County 4-H office, no later than Monday, April 23, 2012.
