The time has come again for the 4-H members of Surry,Yadkin, Wilkes, Ashe, and Alleghany counties to dazzle us with your culinaryskills! The 4-H Area Food Show will be held onSaturday, February 25 at East WilkesMiddle School. The school is about 20 minutes from Dobson and easy to find!Come present your dish in a unique way for a chance to win a $25 value prizebasket! Setup will begin at 9:00 a.m. and end at 9:45a.m. Judging will begin at 9:45 a.m. and should end by 12:00 p.m. While judgestaste these tasty treats participants can enjoy different hands-on activities.

Those interested must fill out and turn in an entryform by Thursday, February 16^th.

The annual 4-H Plant Sale will kick off on January 3!Orders will continue to be taken through Thursday, February 27.

Types of plants sold: strawberries, blackberries,raspberries, blueberries, ornamentals, and various herbs.

Plant pickup will be Thursday, March 8 between 8:15and 5:00 p.m. at the Extension center in Dobson.

Help Kids Fight the Winter Blues!

The winters can be long when you have small children.Sometimes surviving those long winter days just requires a little creativity tomake them feel shorter.

Here are a few of our favorite ways to keep our children entertained:

1.Have an indoor picnic with your children. Spread out a blanket and pack abasket of your favorite picnic foods. Take this time to chat about what youmiss most about the summer.

2. Have a family night playing board games. Offer a grab bagof prizes (purchased from your local dollar store) or let the winner give uptheir chores for the day.
3. Indulge your children in fun winter craft ideas. Make sure you are stockedon plenty of craft supplies so you don’t have to make a trip out in the coldweather. Do these crafts with your children because they are the types ofactivities your children will remember for years to come.
4. Share a day of cooking with your children. Cooking with your kids teachesthem valuable skills and also gives them precious time with you. Have smallerchildren help you measure, stir dry ingredients and count out ingredients withyou. Allow older children to do things themselves under your supervision.

5. Find out what your local library has to offer. Many offeramazing classes and story hours for children during the winter months. You canalso take them to pick out their own books, movies and music to be enjoyedtogether or alone.
6. Play in the snow with your kids. Help them build snow angels, go sledding,build a snow fort or create a snowman. After a hard morning of playing in thesnow, come inside and have a nice cup of hot chocolate complete withmarshmallows and whipped cream.
7. Plan a beach day in the middle of winter. What could be more fun than alittle beach music, drinks with little umbrellas, a big beach ball and beachchairs?

8. Make your own snow. All you need is soap flakes, water,liquid starch and white powdered tempra. Mix soap flakes with water into athick paste. Let your child mix this with a hand beater. Add a small amount ofliquid starch and tempra. Let your child create designs by painting with thismixture.
9. Exercising is one thing often neglected by members of the family when coldweather comes around. Pop in an exercise video or some music and exercise withyour children. Older children can be encouraged to use exercise equipment orjoin you in your exercise routine. For those who are more creative, let looseand just dance.

2012 4-H Summer Camp!

This coming year Surry County 4-H is going tothe Eastern 4-H Center in Columbia, N.C. Mark your calendars today – camp willbe the week of June 24 - 29. To learn more about the Eastern 4-H Centercheck out their website at http://www.eastern4hcenter.org/.

Camp is open for youth between the ages of 8&14. Reserve your spot today with a $75 deposit and a completed 2011 4-Henrollment form. Camp costs = $390.00; included in this price istransportation, lodging, meals, all activities, camp store card, and campT-shirt. Partial scholarships areavailable, contact the 4-H office for an application.

Allscholarship applications and deposits are due to the 4-H office by January 27,2012.

Open Your Heart Christmas Campaign!

The Foothills Food Pantry is beginning to organize their Open Your Heart Christmas Campaign. It is their goal to provide everything necessary to prepare a delicious Christmas meal for approximately 400 families again this year. They hope individuals, families, and the community will choose to participate in this year’s endeavor.

Enrollment for assistance will begin on November 1, and will continue throughout the month. Applications will be taken on Tuesday and Thursday mornings between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. For individuals who work during the day, the food pantry will take applications on Monday evenings from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Listed below are non‐perishable food items that will be delivered with each meal.

Sugar Flour Salt Cranberry Sauce

Yams Cooking oil Hard candy Frosting

Stuffing Coffee Tea Cake mix

As part of the Gingerbread Workshops being offered we are holding a Gingerbread Contest!! For more information on this contest and how to enter click on the Gingerbread Contest Entry Form, found under "Upcoming Event & Activity Forms." This contest is open to all youth between 5 &18 and not excluded to Gingerbread Workshop participants. All are encouraged to enter their favorite creation!

We encourage families to come out and view the exhibit and enjoy some holiday crafts with Surry County 4-H.

Participants will be recognized at the Green Clover 4-H Club meeting, held at Charles H. Stone Memorial Library, on Friday, December 16, from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. Participants may pick up their creations following the December 16 meeting. All entries must be picked up no later than December 21.

Everyone is invited to come out and see what 4‐H is all about! Have you or your child attended a summer class, attended a 4‐H special event, or even been a 4‐H’er yourself and would like to now more about this great program and how it has changed? This is a night to come and join in as we have some fun while learning about 4‐H and all its many opportunities!

During the first art of the night we will be recognizing those 4‐H’ers that submitted project record books and 4‐H clubs for their community involvement. We will also be electing our 2011/2012 County Council officers. County Council is an opportunity for youth ages 10‐19 to participate and plan special activities for 4‐H Clubs and the community. Officers will also learn more about parliamentary procedure and leadership. Anyone who is interested or would like more information about the positions available can call the 4‐H office by Monday, February 14.

The second portion of the evening will consist of crafts, games, and food! Activities will be entered on opportunities available in 4‐H as well as provide a great evening of educational entertainment for the whole family. All are invited! You do NOT have to be a current 4‐H ember to participate. We encourage all youth and their families to come, celebrate, and learn more about the 4‐H youth program here in Surry County. A meal will be provided, so registration is required. When registering, please include any family, friends and/or visitors that may attend. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The admission for the evening is free, but please bring two nonperishable food items per person. All donations collected will be distributed to local families as part of our “Hungry to Help” campaign.

Every day hunger disrupts the lives of 1 in 5 children in North Carolina. Hunger is a problem hiding "in plain sight" in North Carolina. Whether it involves skipping meals, eating less than is needed to live a healthy life, or making do with foods that are filling but not nutritious, hunger's effects can be devastating, especially among our more vulnerable citizens, including children and older adults.

Join others as we combat hunger as we kick off a food drive for our local food banks during National 4-H Week - October 4-10, 2010.

Surry County 4-H will be collecting non-perishable food items at the following drop off sites: Charles H. Stone Memorial Library, Dobson Public Library, Elkin Public Library, Reeves Community Center, Armfield Civic Center, Extension Center, Dobson, and Pilot Mtn. State Park.

Surry County 4-H Plant Sale!

The Surry County 4-H Plant Sale begins today, January 4, 2010, and will continue until February 25, 2010. Plants being sold at this year's plant sale are: blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, sweet onions, herbs, and ornamentals. This annual fund raiser supports Surry County 4-H programming efforts offered to all youth between ages of 5 and 19 through various programs, activities, and events year round. Plant pickup will be on Thursday, March 4, from 8:15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m at the Extension Center in Dobson. Free plant information will be available at pickup.

4-H Achievement Night & Talent Show!

The Surry County 4-H Achievement Night and Talent Show will be held on Tuesday, January 26 at 6:00pm at the First United Methodist Church in Pilot Mountain.

All youth are invited to come and showcase their talent in the first portion of the night’s events. The talent show is open to all youth in the county between the ages of 5 & 19. Pre-registration is required. All performances should be no longer than 4 minutes. Each youth can perform only one act in their designated age category. Each group may perform only one act in any category they choose, during the show. Categories include: dance, song, musical instrument, humorous or dramatic skit.

Each category will be subdivided into the following age groups: 5-8, 9-13, & 14-19 years old. The number of show acts will be limited to 3 per age category under each talent category. Acts will be reserved on a first come, first serve basis. The judges will choose two acts between the ages of 9 -19 that will advance to district competition “4-H Entertains” on June 23. Everyone is encouraged to come, see, and express at this year’s talent show! If you would like to help out behind the scenes contact the 4-H office for details.

4-H Mini Gardens!

Spring will soon be here, so get ready to break out your gardening skills and tools as
the 4-H Mini Gardens get under way. The theme for the 2010 gardens is “Organic Gardening!” Participants will learn about some simple methods to garden organically at the training session on Tuesday, May 4, from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m., at the Extension office in Dobson. Families will cover the basics of the mini garden process, planting, judging, and then will have time to ask questions.
This “green” opportunity is open to any youth between the ages 5 and 19. All “new” participants must attend the mini garden training on May 4. Participants will receive all garden materials at the end of the training. All returning participants may pick up their Mini Garden plants and materials between 7:30 and 8:00 p.m. on May 4.

Registration deadline is Tuesday, April 27. No participants will be allowed to participate after this date. Contest fee: $10.00 for each participant. Fee includes: garden and workshop materials, and entry to Summer Awards Night.

The Foothills Food Pantry is beginning to organize their Open Your Heart Christmas Campaign. It is their goal to provide everything necessary to prepare a delicious Christmas meal for approximately 400 families again this year. They hope individuals, families, and the community will choose to participate in this year’s endeavor.

WC District 4-H Volunteer Leaders' Fall Day

The day promises to include great workshops and networking opportunities with other county club leaders. The event is free and transportation will be provided. The Surry County 4-H Achievement Night and Talent Show will be held on Tuesday, January
26, at 6:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Pilot Mountain. All youth are invited to
come and showcase their talent in the first portion of the night’s events. The talent show is open to all youth in the county between the ages of 5 and 19. Pre-registration is required!

For the second portion of the evening, we will recognize those 4-H’ers who submitted project record books, clubs for their community involvement, and we will elect our 2010/2011
County Council officers. Come prepared to celebrate and enjoy all the activities planned on this fun night!

Area Food Show!

The time has come again for the 4-H members of Surry, Yadkin, Wilkes, and Alleghany counties to dazzle us with your culinary skills! The area food show will be held on February 28 at East Wilkes Middle School. The school is about 30 minutes from Dobson and easy to find! Come a present your dish in a unique way for a chance to win a prize! Setup will begin at 9:00 a.m. and end at 9:45 a.m. Judging will begin at 9:45 a.m. and should end by 12:00 p.m. While judges taste these tasty treats participants can enjoy learning different ways to make eating healthy and exercising fun.

Operation: Military Kids Visual Arts Contest

North Carolina 4-H’s Operation: Military Kids program is proud and excited to announce the first OMK Photography and Arts Contest. The contest is opened to youth. The age categories are

5-8 years old, 9-10 years old, 11-12 years old, 13-15 years old, and 16-18 years old. The contest is designed to introduce youth to Visual Arts as a part of the 4-H Expressive Arts Curriculum. Youth will utilize their skills and their artistry to capture their view of America and patriotism.

Selected visual arts will be displayed during the week of the 2009 North Carolina 4-H Congress, other events and appropriate venues.

N.C. Operation Military Kids: Hero Packs

Hero Packs are Operation Military Kids knapsacks filled with a variety of items from the OMK Partner Agencies, which are given to military youth as a "Thank You" for the sacrifices that they make while their parents are deployed.
Nationally, OMK has presented Hero Packs to over 47,000 Military Youth since 2004.

There are two versions of Hero Packs: Young Hero Packs for youth ages 3 - 8 years and Hero Packs for 9 - 18 years of age. Both Hero Packs contain a variety of items intended to provide children with fun activities and ways to stay connected to their deployed parents. Pilot Mountain Christmas Parade!

Come one, come all! Everyone is invited to ride on the Surry County 4-H float in the Pilot Mountain Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 6. We will have plenty of room aboard a flat bed tractor trailer provided by Ricky White of Pilot Mountain. All those interested in riding on float must call the 4-H office to register. All participants will need to arrive at East Surry High School’s parking lot between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 6. The parade is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. and participants are encouraged to bring a bag of candy. All youth under the age of 14 must have a parent or guardian accompany them on the float and all participants must have completed and signed a waiver.

It getting close to that time of the year again and even though it might be getting cooler outside we are thinking warm thoughts about 4-H Summer Camp 2009! Alleghany's Happy Trails 4-H Horse Camp

The Alleghany 4-H Horse Camp will be held June 2- June 6, 2008 at the Alleghany County Fairgrounds located in Sparta. The nonrefundable camp fee is $100.00 per camper. Half of this fee is due by May 1st to reserve slot. Camper spaces are limited and will be filled based on the following application.

If accepted, campers must bring a horse that is free of disease and in good health. Horses are required to have a current negative Coggins test. No exceptions will be made! Horses exhibiting lameness or behavior problems will be sent home. Camper will be allowed to exchange horses or continue to stay without a horse.

There are openings for Junior Leaders that are registered 4-H’ers. They must be 16-19 years old. Junior Leaders will be assisting the group with camp activities, duties, fixing meals and helping with Cloverbuds. Junior leaders will not be charged. Solving crimes and developing careers in the new millennium are all highlights of this camp. Join in as we learn about forensic science and play the role of a CSI detective. Each participant will gather clues and interrogate suspects to try and solve a murder mystery. These three days are filled with hands-on activities and breakout sessions that will help pull together a variety of laboratory standards. Participants will have the opportunity to tour a funeral home, diagnostic laboratory, and take a tour of the Surry County jail and court house. 26th Annual Fur, Fish, 'n Game Rendezvous

Entering it's 26th year, the Rendezvous is an opportunity for youth to earn their hunter safety certification. Great field experiences with wildlife biologists await those that have already earned their hunter safety certification through the Beginning Camp.
The Rendezvous is a week-long camp for boys and girls ages 12-15, held at Millstone 4-H center, in the beautiful sandhills gamelands. Beginning Campers learn firearm safety and shooting skills from hunter education officers. Other activities include: falconry, bird dogs, trapping, wildlife identification, taxidermy, first aid, canoeing, fishing, a low-ropes course, swimming, and much more!

This year 4-H Mini Gardens are going up! “Vertical Gardening” is the theme for this years garden participants!! It is time to be thinking about beautiful vegetables and flowers all grown with your care. Any one between the ages 5 & 19 is eligible to participate. All participants must attend the mini garden training on Tuesday, May 6 at 6:30 p.m. We will first meet at the Extension office in Dobson for contest overview and then travel to a local garden site for some hands-on demonstration. Surry County 4-H will be hosting its 1st Annual 4-H Talent Show on April 17 at the Downtown Mt. Airy Cinema. All youth are invited to come and showcase their talent. The show is open to all youth in the county between the ages of 5 & 19. Pre-registration is required. All performances should be no longer than 4 minutes. Each youth can perform only one act in their designated age category. Categories include: dance, song, musical instrument, humorous or dramatic skit. The number of show acts will be limited to 3 per age category under each talent category. Acts will be reserved on a first come, first serve basis. Category winners will advance to “Area Expressive Arts Showcase” that will be held Friday, May 2 in Wilkes County. All participants will be put into a drawing for a $25.00 Wal-mart gift card, the drawing will be held on the night of the event. How do I get in on the
4-H Fun?

There are many ways:
1. Join a 4-H club in your area!

2. Ask your family to help start a 4-H club—just 5 members and an adult helper is all you need!

3. Join a special interest group— a group that gets together for a short time to learn about one thing, or to participate in one activity!

4. Enroll as an individual and study what you want, when you want!

5. Look for 4-H school enrichment programs in your school!

What do you do at 4-H meetings?

Being a member of a 4-H club gives children year-round involvement, and without question, provides them with the most well rounded 4-H experience. As a club member, children develop leadership skills, public speaking skills, and social skills as they participate in monthly club meetings, community service projects, citizenship activities, and club outings.

4-H Clubs are organized in communities throughout Surry County. Clubs are led by parent and community volunteers who have been screened and trained by Extension personnel. Since 4-H is a family program, parents and guardians are actively involved at club functions and meetings.

Generally, clubs are organized for members in three different age groups: 5-8, 9-12, and 13-19; however some clubs allow children ages 5-19 to all participate in the same club together and then provide different learning experiences. Most clubs meet once a month in the evenings, or after school.

Membership in a 4-H club is free, and there are no uniforms to purchase. A typical club meeting will include opening pledges, a short business meeting, a hands-on learning activity, and social time, which often includes recreation and refreshments. Meetings usually last 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours, depending on the members’ ages.

4-H Volunteer Leader Roles & Responsibilities:

4-H volunteers are young, older, male, female, suburban, urban and rural. They represent different cultures and social backgrounds.

Some are parents who enjoy spending time with their children, while at the same time acting in a leadership role for the entire club. Others do not have children in 4-H but have skills and experience that strengthen the 4-H program. There are those who grew up in 4-H and want to give something back to the organization that meant so much to them as a youth.

Many volunteer for the experience of interacting with young people and watching them grow in confidence and knowledge.

Job Description:
Organize, lead and maintain a 4-H club for the purpose of helping youth.

Skills Needed:
Enjoys sharing skills or special talents with young people.
Patient, understanding and caring.
The ability to organize and manage a 4-H club.

Volunteer Expectations:
Plan and implement monthly club meetings and other “hands-on” activities.
Encourage leadership among youth and allow club members to take part in the club’s organization and programming.
Assist club members with projects and presentations.
Attend Surry County 4-H Leaders’ meetings and other district and state volunteer leaders’ meetings.
Inform enrolled youth of county, district and state 4-H Extension program opportunities.
Recruit new members and volunteer helpers if possible.
Attend 4-H Leader’s orientation training conducted by county 4-H staff.
