National 4-H Week!

October 5–11, 2014 is National 4-H Week. All clubs and 4-Hers are asked to promote 4-H by wearing 4-H t-shirts to school or out and about in the community. Spread the word about what 4-H has done for you or find a new way to get involved. We will also have other things going on throughout the week so be sure to check our Facebook page for updates!

Here are some more great ways to celebrate:
  • Share your favorite 4-H memory on social media (use #iam4h)
  • Send a thank you note to a 4-H leader or volunteer
  •  Recruit friends to join you at your next 4-H club meeting
  •  Commit to trying something new this year with 4-H & let Whitney know you are committed! (Project Record Book, 4-H Presentation, Volunteer, 4-H Congress, 4-H Council Conference)
  • Represent! Wear your 4-H shirt with pride!

During National 4-H week we challenge your 4-H club to recruit some new 4-H club members to join you in the REVOLUTION OF RESPONSIBILITY. What exactly is the 4-H Revolution of Responsibility? It is a movement for positive change in every community in America. 4-H youth are a living breathing, culture-changing revolution for doing the right thing, breaking through obstacles, and pushing our country forward by making a measureable difference right where they live.

Tractor Supply Paper Clover Fundraiser

Starting April 23rd-May 4th the Paper Clover Fundraiser will be going on at Tractor Supply locations across the country. Our local Tractor Supply stores (in both Elkin and Mt Airy) are looking for 4-H'ers to come out on Saturday, April 26 or May 3 to help promote the fundraiser and raise money for 4-H. They would like for us to set up a table outside of the store for a couple of hours to tell people about 4-H and ask them to donate a dollar at checkout for 4-H.

100% of the fundraiser will benefit 4-H with 70% staying local to each store.

I am asking for 4-H clubs, volunteers, parents, and youth who may be interested in helping out on either Saturday at the Elkin or Mt Airy store to contact Whitney at (336) 401-8025 or whitney_sprinkle@ncsu.edu for further details (time, materials, etc).

FEMA Youth Preparedness Council

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is seeking applicants for its Youth Preparedness Council.
The Youth Preparedness Council is a unique opportunity for youth leaders to serve on a highly distinguished national council and participate in the Youth Preparedness Council Summit. Additionally, the youth leaders have the opportunity to complete a self-selected youth preparedness project and to share their opinions, experiences, ideas, solutions and questions regarding youth disaster preparedness with the leadership of FEMA and national youth preparedness organizations. Once selected, members serve on the Council for one year, with the option to extend for an additional year, if formally requested by FEMA.

Council activities and projects center around five key areas of engagement: Programs, Partnerships, Events, Public Speaking/Outreach and Publishing. Members represent the youth perspective on emergency preparedness and share information with their communities. They also meet with FEMA on a regular basis to provide ongoing input on strategies, initiatives and projects throughout the duration of their term.

Any individual between the ages of 12 and 17 who is engaged in individual and community preparedness or who has experienced a disaster that has motivated him or her to make a positive difference in his or her community, may apply to serve on the Youth Preparedness Council. Individuals who applied last year are highly encouraged to apply again. Adults working with youth and/or community preparedness are encouraged to share the application with youth who might be interested in applying.

Youth interested in applying to the Council must submit a completed application form and two  letters of recommendation. Specific information about completing and submitting the application and attachments can be found in the application instructions. All applications and supporting materials must be received no later than February 24, 2014, 11:59 p.m. EST in order to be eligible.
