"Get More with Milk!"

In celebration of June Dairy Month, posters are now being accepted for the 4-H Dairy Poster Contest sponsored by the Southeast United Dairy Industry Association (SUDIA).  The deadline for submissions for 2016 will be August 31.  Please send your entries to Dr. Shannon Davidson, NCSU Box 7621, Raleigh, NC, 27695 or deliver them to the Animal Science Department at NCSU.

Contact Whitney at (whitney_collins@ncsu.edu) for contest details.  Winners will receive cash prizes from SUDIA and have their work displayed in the Jim Graham Building during the NC State Fair Dairy Shows.

4-H Plant Sale

The annual Surry County 4-H Plant Sale is in full swing! A variety of plants are available just in time for spring planting! Choose your favorite variety of blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, fruit trees, herbs, and more. All sale proceeds will go to help support the county 4-H program. All proceeds are utilized for scholarships and to help sponsor county-wide 4-H events. All orders must be turned into the Extension office by Monday, March 28.
Plants will be available for pick up on Thursday, April 7 between 8:15 & 5:00 p.m. at the N.C. Cooperative Extension office in Dobson.

4-H Camp 2016

This year, Surry County 4‐H is going to Betsy Jeff Penn 4‐H Camp in Reidsville, North Carolina. Mark your calendars today – camp will be the week of July 31 ‐ August 5

Camp is open for youth between the ages of 8 and 14. Reserve your spot today with a $75 deposit and a completed 2016 4‐H enrollment form. 
Traditional Campers (ages 8‐12) camp costs = $420.00. Trekker Campers (ages 13‐14) camp costs = $440.00. Included in these prices are transportation, lodging, meals, all activities, camp store card, and camp T‐shirt. 

Partial scholarships are available, so contact the 4‐H office for an application. All scholarship applications are due to the 4‐H office by February 26, 2016. The deadline for registering is February 26th as well, and the $75 deposit must be received by that date to reserve your spot. Horticultural Science Summer Institute

The Horticultural Science Summer Institute will be July 10-15, 2016 and is sponsored by North Carolina State University and North Carolina Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Program with the Department of Horticultural Science.   High school-aged youth (rising sophomores, juniors and seniors) are invited to apply to a weeklong, residential horticultural experience on the campus of NC State University. 

Youth will have hands-on opportunities to explore a broad range of horticultural possibilities from breeding better fruits and vegetables, growing a diverse selection of woody ornamentals, lengthening the life of cut flowers, learning sustainable production practices and delving into practical and molecular tools that enhance our understanding of plant processes. Participants will visit a variety of horticultural businesses. Youth will also be introduced to career possibilities, college-making decisions and leadership development and enjoy evening entertainment and team-building activities.  

The cost of the institute will be $550 with a $150 deposit due upon application acceptance. All lodging, workshop materials and field trips and most meals are provided. Scholarships may be available. Applications are due Friday, April 15th and notification of acceptance will follow shortly thereafter.

NC Beekeeping Essay!

Explore more about the fascinating story of the hardworking honey bee by encouraging your 4-H youth to participate in the North Carolina 4-H Beekeeping Essay contest. The essay provides a platform for youth to creatively express their working knowledge and research of the craft of beekeeping.
This year's theme:“Bees and Pollination. How Important is it?” 
Beekeeping has had is five minutes of fame for the past five years. Now more than ever, people are asking “What will happen if the bees are gone?” Your paper should research and help answer this question.
Survey your community to see what is being done to help honey bees. Include your state in your survey to see if there is a wildflower planting program available or any other program that could aid the honey bee.

Essays are due February 26th at 5pm and should be emailed to Liz Driscoll at liz_driscoll@ncsu.edu

4-H Area Food Show

Does your child/children enjoy making some goodies in the kitchen?! Here is an opportunity for them to share their favorite recipe in a FUN way with others!
The time has come again for the 4-H members of Surry, Yadkin, Wilkes, and Alleghany counties to dazzle us with your culinary skills! The 4-H Area Food Show will be held on Saturday, March 5th at East Wilkes Middle School. The school is about 20 minutes from Dobson and easy to find! Come present your dish in a unique way for a chance to win a $25 value prize basket! Setup will begin at 9:30 a.m. and end at 10:00 a.m. Judging will begin at 10:00 a.m. and should end by 12:00 p.m. While judges taste these tasty treats participants can enjoy different hands-on activities.
Those interested must fill out and turn in an entry form by Friday, February 26.
