4-H Area Food Show

Does your child/children enjoy making some goodies in the kitchen?! Here is an opportunity for them to share their favorite recipe in a FUN way with others!

The time has come again for the 4-H members of Surry, Yadkin, Wilkes, Ashe, and Alleghany counties to dazzle us with your culinary skills! The 4-H Area Food Show will be held on Saturday, March 7th at East Wilkes Middle School. The school is about 20 minutes from Dobson and easy to find! Come present your dish in a unique way for a chance to win a $25 value prize basket! Setup will begin at 9:00 a.m. and end at 9:45 a.m. Judging will begin at 9:45 a.m. and should end by 12:00 p.m. While judges taste these tasty treats participants can enjoy different hands-on activities.

Those interested must fill out and turn in an entry form by Friday, February 27th.

Below is a list of upcoming workshops.  I have just included the bare minimum info here, but for more detailed information please visit our NEW web site http://plt.ces.ncsu.edu.  Not sure what Project Learning Tree is about? Visit www.plt.org to learn how this resource can help you teach about the built and natural environment.

Please register for the workshops with the contact person listed. Remember - most workshops and materials are provided free of charge unless otherwise listed through our partnerships with the NC Forestry Association, NC Forest Service, and others.  CEU and EE Certification credits are available at all workshops, SAF credits are available at select workshops.
Please heed the registration deadlines.... if facilitators do not meet their minimums by the registration deadlines, they may cancel the workshop and then everyone misses out.

Swine Bootcamp 101

Any beginner swine folks that are interested in attending the Swine Bootcamp 101, please register to the Edgecombe County Extension office by January 30, 2015. 252-641-7827

Location:  1175 Kingsboro Rd. Rocky Mount, NC

The guest speakers will be Brent Jennings & Garrett See!  Beginners will gain a wealth of knowledge from these two and we will even have a chance for hands-on showmanship techniques at the event.

Upcoming Livestock Programs

What: NC Junior Hereford Association Judging in January

Who:  This is a livestock judging contest that is open to youth up to the age of 18.  It is designed for both experienced kids and beginners.  For more information on this event please contact Steve Sifford at 336-376-0541 or 919-618-2198.  
Entries are January 15th and the registration form will be posted on the 4-H Youth Livestock webpage.

What: Nance Family Meat Goat Leadership Institute
When: February 7, 2015
Where: NCSU Beef Educational Unit
Who:  This event is open to youth ages 10-19 that have a desire to enhance their leadership skills and learn about! the meat goat industry.  This event is free to youth, but they must fill out an application that can be found at http://www.cals.ncsu.edu/an_sci/extension/animal/4hyouth/ah4h.html.  Applications are due January 9th.

2015 4-H Winterfest

It’s getting pretty cold already, but we are looking forward to seeing you all in January for our 2015 North Central District 4-H Winterfest! 

Winterfest is a one day event for all 4-Hers in the North Central District ages 11 and up. In the morning there will be an interactive workshop called “The Reality Store” as well as a community service project led by your District Officers. In the afternoon we will have lunch followed by your choice of Ice Skating or Bowling with your fellow 4-H Members!

Date: Saturday, January 31st

Locations: Greensboro - Guilford County CooperativeExtension Office (3309 Burlington Rd), Greensboro Ice House (6119 Landmark Center Blvd), and Triad Lanes (21 Oak Branch Dr)

Times: Arrival between 9:00-9:30am, Program from 9:30am-3:00pm

Cost: $20/person including Adults (Checks payable to North Central District 4-H Council)

4-H Presentations

Do you have anything you are particularly interested in and would like to tell us about? If so, you may want to participate in 4-H Presentations! Topics range from animals to cooking and everything else in between.

Youth who participate will receive $15 in 4-H scholarship money. Winners who place will win $5 more for each level (Bronze $20, Silver $25, and Gold $30).

County presentations are scheduled for April 14th and 16th beginning at 3:30 pm each day. Please call us at the Extension Office (401-8025) to sign up for a time slot. 

You MUST present at the county level before you can be considered for district competition.
